Article Abstract:
The relationship of self-imposed abstinence and moderate drinking among chronic alcoholics is evaluated. A 12-month behavioral management treatment program found 46% of 106 subjects chose abstinence, 44% chose moderate drinking and 9% were undecided. Subjects who decided to reduce their alcohol consumption over a 12-month follow-up period reported successful outcomes. The implications of the follow-up results are also evaluated.

The NODS was administered to problem gamblers as part of a 1-year follow-up after a brief treatment, and showed promise as an outcome measure of gambling problems.
