Drinking goal selection in behavioral self-management treatment of chronic alcoholics

Article Abstract:

The relationship of self-imposed abstinence and moderate drinking among chronic alcoholics is evaluated. A 12-month behavioral management treatment program found 46% of 106 subjects chose abstinence, 44% chose moderate drinking and 9% were undecided. Subjects who decided to reduce their alcohol consumption over a 12-month follow-up period reported successful outcomes. The implications of the follow-up results are also evaluated.
