Article Abstract:

Nicotine has an important role in tobacco use, but it is noted that there are several factors that can potentially affect the size of a given effect of nicotine. This issue is discussed with a focus on whether nicotine directly affects cognition, leading to further investigations of the direct and indirect effects of nicotine and nicotine withdrawal.

Research is presented concerning the relationship between the risk for depressive symptoms and diabetes mellitus in individuals who are ceasing smoking. The negative effects of depression and anxiety are discussed.

Research is presented concerning the smoking pattern of 254 community-dwelling polydrug users over a 3-year period. The conversion of non-smokers to intermittent smokers and then to everyday smokers is discussed.
