Article Abstract:

This article examines the supportive and culturally sensitive approach to child welfare used in New Zealand. Influential reforms in New Zealand's family policy in 1989 resulted in a greater focus on maintaining a child's cultural identity when considering care placements and involving extended family members in child welfare decisions.

The fluid patterns of migration and immigration cause disruption of traditional identities and intra-familial stress.
