Counterfactuals as behavioral primes: priming the simulation heuristic and consideration of alternatives
Article Abstract:
This study investigates the effects of counterfactual thinking, or reflection on alternative realities, on behavior and judgement. Three experiments reveal that counterfactual primes improve subsequent problem solving by activating a simulation mind-set that increases attention to relevant alternatives and solutions.
