Article Abstract:
Analysis of a convenience sample of young people in the 20-25 age category undergoing treatment for substance abuse revealed that persons opting for residential treatment experienced more mental health and addiction problems with a higher probability of earlier treatment experiences compared to those opting for nonresidential treatment. The study results imply that education as to the benefits of nonresidential treatment can enhance treatment plans for the young adult age group.

Article Abstract:
The causal mechanisms which explain the correlation between posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and substance abuse are analyzed. The causal hypotheses considered include self-medication of PTSD symptoms, substance users' high risk of exposure to trauma and substance abusers' increased vulnerability to PTSD following a traumatic experience. The existence of an indirect link between substance use disorders and PTSD is also examined.
