Adolescent smoking and drinking: The role of communal mastery and other social influences

Article Abstract:

The various social influences of adolescent smoking and drinking that include social motives, communal mastery, parental attitudes and peers' substance use patterns are described. It is found that high levels of communal mastery is an important protective factor against adolescent boys' smoking and drinking however for girls the role of social motives, friends' and best friends' substance use and parental approval are important.

Daily patterns of alcohol, cigarette, and marijuana use in adolescent smokers and nonsmokers

Article Abstract:

Timeline followback (TLFB) methodology was used to assess the daily use of cigarettes, alcohol, and marijuana in adolescent cigarette smokers and nonsmokers. Of those smokers and nonsmokers who drank alcohol and used marijuana, smokers reported more frequent daily use of alcohol, but not marijuana.

Parental awareness of adolescent substance abuse

Article Abstract:

A survey of 985 high school students and their parents in Alberta, Canada revealed that most parents were unaware that their children smoked, drank alcohol or took illicit drugs. The surveys revealed that only 11% of parents knew of their child's drug use.
