Adolescent smoking and depression: Which comes first?

Article Abstract:

A study that was carried out to evaluate the direction of the relation between cigarette smoking and depression among adolescents by using data from the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health is described. It is seen that females showed a striking pattern of increase in depression during the onset of smoking and decreases at the time of quitting.

Stress-coping and temptation-coping as predictors of adolescent substance use

Article Abstract:

Research has examined the assumption that stress-coping and temptation-coping contribute to the prediction of substance use independently. It is hypothesized that substance-abusing adolescents will show more emotion-focused stress-coping, less temptation-coping and less problem-focused stress-coping than adolescents without problems of substance use.
