Addictive behaviors and depression among African Americans residing in a public housing community

Article Abstract:

There are many significant psychosocial factors influencing choices about cigarette and alcohol consumption, and studies have suggested a link between cigarette smoking, alcohol use and depression. To determine if demographic factors, such as socioeconomic status and ethnicity, affect this link, a sample of African Americans from a single public-housing community was assessed. Cigarette smoking was not linked to the severity of depressive symptoms, but increased symptoms of depression were linked to alcohol use patterns.
