Article Abstract:
A study was conducted on the impact of teachers' evaluation of student behavior on grades and on associations between grades and student behavior, sex, abilities, attitude and family background. Results show that academic achievement represents teachers' assessment of pupil performance as well as the student's actual performance. Results indicate that the effects of student behavior on academic achievement depends on teachers' perception of the student.

The diminishing work opportunities for blacks in the manufacturing and service sector of Los Angeles, CA, is discussed. Network hiring brings immigrant workers into the workplace which leaves less vacancies for blacks. Immigrant workers are also favored over blacks because they are perceived to be more productive and more tractable. In addition, employers hire immigrants over blacks to prevent tension in the predominantly Latino workforce.

Article Abstract:
A secondary analysis was conducted on the 1992 statewide, population-based 'Perinatal Substance Exposure Study' in California to investigate the effects of levels of neighborhood public assistance for pregnant white and black women. It explores the hypothesis that the problem of substance exposure is germane for all races and socioeconomic statuses despite differences in prevalence rates along race and class lines. Results are discussed.
