Article Abstract:
Research conducted in two tract-housing neighborhoods in the summer of 1987 revealed that yard ornamentation is a means for residents to mark the boundaries of their territories without building permanent structures. The neighborhoods were chosen on the assumption that the uniformity of allocated built space would offer an ideal opportunity to detect patterns and contrasts in landscaping and the transformation of porches. The decoration of house facades and care of front lawns, slow processes that modify suburbs, allow individuals to personalize the living space allotted to them.

'Cinderella' can be seen as a quintessential fairy story with patriarchal royalty, wicked steprelatives, Prince Charming, and a damsel in need who is chaste. Fairy stories appear to express our desires since we have absorbed their standards as children. Their validity may thus remain unquestioned.
