A cross-national test of propositions from the neo-pluralist perspective on social security expenditures

Article Abstract:

A study was conducted to analyze the evolution of cross-national differences in retirement wage policy based on a number of fault lines. These fault lines correlated with ethnic, racial and linguistic differentiation, division between heavily urbanized and segments of the working population, and fractionalization resulting from the domination of a single industry. Results indicated that the advent of social security programs correlated with increases in the concentration of salaried workers in bureaucratic organizations.

Fostering a rational debate on social insurance

Article Abstract:

There are two issues that need to be addressed regarding Medicare and Social Security reforms. One is a suggestion for the two social services to be privatized while the other is a suggestion to debate the two services on a separate basis. It is important to note that government financing reductions might lead to competition between the services. Social security can be privatized by allowing members to invest a portion of their salary contributions in securities with the government providing only a minimum of support.

Medicare and health care reform

Article Abstract:

Medicare, which is the largest health care program in the US, provides the major source of insurance for care for the elderly and the disabled. However, changes are needed to improve its service. Medicare should be part of any package of comprehensive health care reform. Its cost-sharing structure and administration should be improved. Any reduction in the spending on Medicare should be deliberated carefully.
