Considerable documentation is available of the new forms of government emerging in rural and regional settings but the gender aspects of these arrangements have been somewhat neglected. An examination of a new governing organization in a small rural Australian township reveals how the governance of contemporary Western rural nations continue to be gendered in a manner that keeps out women and feminine subjectivities.

The Australian outback mythology is frequently invoked in attempts to unify Australians and smooth over differences, which is accomplished by appeals to shared heritage and shared cultural and economic interests. An attempt made to explore a facet of outback mythology, and symbolisms associated with the extensive grazing industries of inland and northern Australia is presented.

The process and usefulness of reflexivity in rural research with a study of women's participation in the Australian sugar industry is illustrated. A brief reflexive examination of some of the challenges faced in taking up a new identity of 'academic feminist' in rural sociology is concluded.
