A microeconomic model is developed that would analyze the competition of software development with or without frameworks in which one can concentrate on the network effect and the effect of compatibility decisions. This would help to establish framework technology on the software market and finally increase social welfare.

The compatibility strategies which companies use and their effectiveness for software development is discussed with the help of a case study of Sun Microsystems. The findings suggest that with the focus on de facto compatibility, standardization need not be the most effective strategy.
