Multiculturalism and political correctness: the challenge of applied anthropology in curricular politics

Article Abstract:

The challenge of defining multiculturalism and its implications on the current curriculum debate in universities is posed to cultural anthropologists in the academe. The decline in enrolment rates of multicultural student population and the intensifying climate of intolerance in universities are cited to express the urgency of solving education failure problems. Since anthropology is an especially appropriate discipline to provide information on race and ethnicity issues, its contribution to the formulation of responsive curricula changes can be invaluable.

The role of applied anthropology in sustainable development in Costa Rica is discussed, with a focus on the culture sector of the Costa Rican National Strategy for Sustainable Development. Topics include the Costa Rican National Strategy for Sustainable Development; the evolution of the culture sector in relation to economic development during the recent past; constraints, restrictions and obstacles to the conservation and sustainable development of the sector; and implementation, monitoring and continuity.

Globalization and anthropology: expanding the options

An expanded view of globalization and anthropology suggests that positive aspects of globalization can be utilized to counter the negative aspects.
