Institutions and the map of science: matching university departments and fields of research

Article Abstract:

Analysis of Australian university data reveals that the use of performance indicators at the departmental level obscures important features of modern research that is characterized by a high level of interdisciplinary research. The study also points out that efforts to introduce system-wide evaluation of research could leave interdisciplinary research and institutions yet unorganized at a comparative disadvantage so there is need for the use of field-coded research information.

Managing innovation: the pursuit of competitive advantage and the design of innovation intense environments

Article Abstract:

An analysis of comparative advantage initiative effects on policy instruments particularly the development of innovation intense environments (IIEs) reveals that there is substantial variation in IIE design that relies only on a limited definition of innovation. The study highlights that there is a need to reintroduce other issues and concepts into the dominant discourse on innovation management and IIE design.

An analysis of deregulation effects on the competitiveness and technology acquisition of the Indian automobile industry reveals that the development of competitive skills still crucially depend on the ability to build specific technology trajectory advantages. The study also finds that vertical integration also appears to be a major determinant of competitiveness.
