Empirical evaluation of alternative model specifications to predict commuting flows

Article Abstract:

Various conclusions were gathered in a study on how properties of spatial structure affect commuting flows. The conclusions depended on the chosen model specifications where measurements of frequencies of within-zone journeys-to-work greatly influenced the results of the evaluation of both the competing-destinations formulation and the standard gravity model. From this, it was found that the competing-destinations formulation is more superior to the conventional gravity model and that the parametric specification of the accessibility measure is essential.

Network approach to commuting

Article Abstract:

A model of commuting flows in a network of towns is described. The model is formulated to predict changes in the journey-to-work resulting from changes in the network structure. Although the model differs considerably from a spatial equilibrium method, it demonstrates the effect of spatial structure in a framework in which the global network configuration determines interaction. A general model for the commuting of labor between the nodes in the network is suggested.

Modeling spatial structures through equilibrium states for transition matrices

Article Abstract:

A model of spatial interaction within a set of towns is designed by the formation of a system where the spatial structure is created by the designation of a transition probability matrix. The framework is composed of four important parameters: absorption, step, distance deterrence and alpha. The resulting framework is then utilized to evaluate specific interaction problems by evaluating its effects on population increase and mobility flows within the region.
