Common sense computer security techniques

Article Abstract:

Security measures need to be taken with local area computer networks (LANs) to ensure the confidentiality of stored information and to prevent tampering or deletion of files. LANs are particularly vulnerable to security risks because information is shared by users and data may be stored on several computers using various LANs. One way of securing the LANs is by denying unauthorized users access to sensitive data through the use of software and hardware mechanisms. Identification methods, such as passwords or 'smart card' keys may be used. Data may also be scrambled so that intercepting data being transmitted would prove futile. Other security measures that may be adopted include providing physical security to the LANs, promoting security awareness among employees, regularly checking of passwords, periodically creating backups, and destroying obsolete, but sensitive data.

Article Abstract:

Preparations must be made for possible electrical power problems to avoid costly damages to the company. Power problems, coming in various forms such as spikes, surges, noises, brown-outs and outages and are usually the result of lightning, utility blackouts and regular office activities, can cause considerable harm not just to an ongoing work but also to stored files and equipments. To prevent power spikes, surge protectors or surge suppressors can be used although these and other power protection devices have to be replaced regularly due to their corrosive metal-oxide varistors components. Back-up power can be obtained through a stand-by power supply or an uninterruptible power supply. Employing these devices ensure that priceless files are well-protected and that precious time is not wasted restoring the system.
