Article Abstract:
The effectiveness of several methods of protecting the competitive benefits and economic returns of technical innovations is studied. To this end, a survey of 358 research and development executives from 127 Swiss manufacturing firms was carried out in 1988. The respondents ranked patents against imitation, patents for licensing, secrecy, lead time, superior sales and service efforts, as well as capturing and protecting cost advantages as applied to product and process innovations.

Article Abstract:
The strategic importance of technological change on competition is analyzed through the introduction of dual technological trees (DTT). DTT present a hierarchical map of the various technological options that may be examined to fill a certain generic function in the marketplace. The dynamic interplay between DTT and several customer concept trees on the market side is also examined. The implications of the results for management are likewise spelled out.
