Acts of remembrance, large or small, are tributes to the deceased, celebrating lives that have touched people while expressing their grief over loss and honoring their place in their ongoing life. It can take the form of formal or informal memorials, donations and services, creative arts and literary works, planting trees, creating gardens, taking care of deceased's possessions and sharing memories in private or public annual gatherings.

This article examines the tendency of older people not to acquire new possessions, but to link their identities to cherished possessions. The author photographed some of these possessions in the homes of Florida retirees, and explains how the values placed on these objects cannot be manufactured through marketing campaigns.
