Article Abstract:
Recent court cases have held that employers who are self-insured for healthcare under ERISA may reduce insurance coverage following submission of claims for AIDS and HIV-related conditions. In the case of McGann v H&H Music Co, the company adopted self-insurance under ERISA and set a life-time cap on AIDS and HIV-related claims at $5,000. McGann sued in federal court and lost on summary judgment and then lost on appeal. A petition for certiorari was filed with the Supreme Court and denied. Legislative help may be forthcoming, but the issue of catastrophic health coverage should be met at the level of national policy.

The study aims to find out if participatory processes do make a valuable contribution in communication-based project implementation/evaluation and the fight against HIV/AIDS. Participatory processes were noted to have created an enabling environment for project beneficiaries to become activists for social change, leading to the limiting of the spread of HIV/AIDS through sexual behavior and a change of attitude, the essence required for successful intervention.
