Article Abstract:
The federal government allotted more than $88 million for the implementation of the abstinence-only education programs. However, the programs were found to be ineffective and will not contribute to a comprehensive sexuality education. Furthermore, the programs became law even without the benefit of public input or Congressional debate and will receive automatic refunding every year for the next five years. Proponents of comprehensive sexuality education are urged to show their refusal against the abstinence-only approach by explaining to state officials the flaws of the programs.

Article Abstract:
Adolescents should be encouraged to wait until they are physically, cognitively, and emotionally ready for mature sexual relationships and their consequences. There is a lack of information on abstinence, and current statistics on adolescence and abistinence are provided, along with educational approaches. Interventions that encourage teenagers to delay sexual intercourse have a strong abstinence message. None of the abstinence-only programs were found to have consistent and significant effects on delaying intercourse.

Article Abstract:
The Postponing Sexual Involvement sexuality education curriculum has been adapted to come into line with the seven restriction provisions of the new federal abstinence-only education guidelines. The new adaptation, titled Managing Pressures Before Marriage, may risk alienating sexually active adolescents, the children of single parents or those who are gay, lesbian or bisexual, according to some. Other criticisms include the brief mention of HIV/AIDs and contraception and condoms.
