Scientists have discovered new risk factors to heart disease, such as the amino acid homocysteine, periodontal disease, and bacterial infections. However, controlled alcohol intake, higher HDL cholesterol levels, and increased sexual activity are viewed as beneficial to health.

After Donnelly Goehring retired, aged 68, she joined a program affiliated with the Jesuit Volunteer Corps, for people over the age of 50 to serve the poor in an inner city area. Issues concerning her decision and assignment are presented.
