Ethnicity and decision-makers in a group of frail older people

Article Abstract:

A patient's ethnicity may determine what person he or she chooses to be an alternative decision-maker. Researchers analyzed the use of alternative decision-makers by 1,193 elderly patients participating in the PACE program. Only 8% of whites had an alternative decision-maker, compared to 15% of Asians and Hispanics and one-third of blacks. Whites were most likely to ask a spouse, Asians a son and blacks and Hispanics a daughter to be their alternative decision-maker.
