Article Abstract:
Old age leads to deficits in working memory, perceptual speed, and central executive functioning. Old age deficits were not found in phonological loop functioning. Control of research variables for perceptual speed results in a nonsignificant age effect on memory span, but this could not be achieved when control for central executive functioning was done. Age-related deficit in central executive functioning is probably a by-product of reduced perceptual speed.

Article Abstract:
Age-related declines in attention and cognition have been linked with problems in inhibiting the processing of task-irrelevant information. The effects of age on the processing of task-irrelevant stimuli were studied using scalp-recorded event-related brain potentials. Deviant auditory stimuli resulted in a mismatch negativity (MMN) wave that lessened with age. Age-related changes are consistent with the inhibitory deficit hypothesis.

Article Abstract:
Research describing the age related decline in working memory capacity is presented. Experiments with different age groups showed older participants to have reduced memory spans but that language functions may not differ with age.
