Article Abstract:
A longitudinal study of the relationship between pain, functional disability and symptoms of depression in younger and older cancer patients validated earlier results showing that functional disability mediates the impact of pain on symptoms of depression. Over time, activity restriction increased proportionately with pain, thus triggering a rise in depressed affect. Due to lower expectations, and greater exposure to illness and disability restricted activities caused less distress to the older people.
