Article Abstract:

The ethical issues encountered in treating abused aged by the health care professionals include confidentiality, caregiver burdens and insufficient family supports, dependency relationships and the longstanding patterns of family interaction. The codes of professional ethics identify the ethical concepts of beneficence, self-autonomy, paternalism, confidentiality, justice and respect for family rights. Case studies reveal the ethical dilemmas and the problems faced during the treatment of the abused aged in the family context.

Three case studies of elder mistreatment: identifying ethical issues

Article Abstract:

The ethical issues emerging from three case studies include the values of self determination, the societal commitment to protect its citizens, the family responsibility to protect its members, and the principle of doing no harm. The dilemmas caused by competing values pose an additional problem for the professionals dealing with elder mistreatment. Case studies, taken from a variety of real-life situations, illustrate the range and complexity of ethical issues faced by health care professionals.

An Adult Protective Services perspective

Article Abstract:

Case studies show the need for multidisciplinary cooperation to assimilate the information and resources necessary to resolve the problems related to elder mistreatment. Ethical values and protocols as well as the systemic constraints needs to be understood in relation to the practices of public agencies. The development of Adult Protective Services programs in relation to federal law and policy, and the differences in such programs among the states is elucidated.
