Elder care case management involves individualized and client-focused therapy aiming towards client independence, autonomy, protection of rights, and access to services while accounting for individual differences and values. The case situations account for both formal ethical protocols and the subjects' personal ethos along with the issues of quality of life. The role of case managers becomes more effective by incorporating the expertise of other professionals. Case studies highlight the ethical issues and dilemmas experienced in treating abused aged people.

The ability of the Office of the Long-Term Care Ombudsman to work with elder care service providers and professionals from allied disciplines is important to achieve the desired outcomes for the clients. The ombudsman needs to work with a variety of disciplines and may require referral of the case to an appropriate agency. Proper awareness regarding the scope and philosophy of each discipline is imperative in order to address the ethical issues and dilemmas. The role and scope of the ombudsman is illustrated through case studies.

The ethical issues encountered in treating abused aged by the health care professionals include confidentiality, caregiver burdens and insufficient family supports, dependency relationships and the longstanding patterns of family interaction. The codes of professional ethics identify the ethical concepts of beneficence, self-autonomy, paternalism, confidentiality, justice and respect for family rights. Case studies reveal the ethical dilemmas and the problems faced during the treatment of the abused aged in the family context.
