Article Abstract:

Infrared detectors that are used to create pictures from radiated heat have limited sensitivity. The ability to tune in several infrared frequencies improves when detectors are made using a small antenna and low-temperature niobium superconductors.

True blue: a zinc compound adds to the laser spectrum

Article Abstract:

Researchers at 3M have developed a method for using zinc selenide to shift semiconductor lasers to the blue end of the spectrum. This innovation may result in improved versions of such products as compact discs and color printers.
