American research universities face increasing demands and decreasing funding. Stanford University president emeritus Donald Kennedy believes that inertia and unbalanced power structures hamper university presidents in making decisions that will improve university research.

Article Abstract:

The US trade deficit has skyrocketed and its high-tech market share keeps dropping because of outdated antitrust policies that do not burden the economies of East Asia. Decreasing support for basic and applied research will hurt US competitiveness even more.
