Engineers Billy Boyle, Andrew Koehl and David Ruiz-Alonso have developed a button-size chemical sensor prototype for detecting trace amounts of explosives before their detonation. High-field asymmetric waveform ion mobility spectrometry (FAIMS) is the analytic technique applied for detecting the signature smell of the substance.
