Article Abstract:
The remedial design of the Marathon Battery Superfund site in Cold Spring, NY, involved different sampling methods due to the site's varied topography. The site had been releasing process wastewater into an adjacent marsh and through an outfall pipe near Colorado Spring Pier. The EPA had assigned the Kansas CityDistrict Army Corps of Engineers to handle the project while the latter contracted with Malcolm Pirnie Inc to finish the design. The design has won several awards including the grand prize in the American Academy of Environmental Engineering and US Corps of Engineers Design and Environmental Awards.

Article Abstract:
An inner-city revitalization project involving 9.5 acres of real estate in Hartford, CT, has been launched. The clean-up project aims to recover almost 50,000 tons of soil from that parcel of land by removing hazardous materials such as products with total petroleum hydrocarbon. After removing the contaminated soil, the land will undergo a backfill method to replace the polluted soil. Afterwards, the land will be compacted. The site is allocated for the construction of a learning center.
