Article Abstract:

The Thrust SSC supersonic car has 147 on-board sensors for monitoring several aspects of the vehicle's operation as it undergoes test runs. Information gathered from these sensors will be used to enhance the car's performance in preparation for pushing the car towards speeds of 800 mph or more. These on-board electronic systems will also provide indicators that will automatically adjust different aspects of the car such as its active suspension system, loading on its wheels and the pressure on its tailplane.

While the expense of RPT equipment usually restricts its use to large manufacturers, RPT service specialists such as Formation Engineering Services of Gloucester, England, have become available for smaller firms. Two major types of RPT, stereolithography and rapid tooling, are advancing swiftly.

Article Abstract:

A new report from Deloitte Consulting reveals that the most successful companies are those which put their customers first. The report, entitled 'Making Customer Loyalty Real - Lessons from Leading Manufacturers', gives examples of leading companies which allow customers to define their own needs. One example is aeroengine maker Rolls-Royce which specifically tailors its products to customer needs, allowing them to focus on their own marketing issues.
