Measuring the metabolism of small organisms

Article Abstract:

The Warburg apparatus allows measurement of the respiration of small organisms such as insects. Respiration is calculated based on the decrease in air pressure in the airtight container inside the apparatus, the water temperature and the distance covered by the oil droplet inside a capillary tube.

The importance of calibrating a laboratory thermometer to ensure accurate temperature readings is emphasized. A procedure to calibrate such an instrument using alcohol, carbon dioxide and mercury is described.
