Article Abstract:
A research examined the adsorption characteristics of nitroaromatic compunds (NACs), which include several pollutants such as trinitrotoluene and herbicides, through the application of the in situ spectroscopic techniques 13C-NMR, ATR-FTIR, UV/VIS, and XRD. Results show a n-pi electron donor-acceptor complex between oxygens of the siloxane surfaces of both clay and NACs. H-bonding contributed to the adsorption of NACs from apolar solvent, however, it is not effective in aqueous environments.

Article Abstract:
The adsorption of nitroaromatic explosives and pesticides to clay minerals was investigated. It was shown that nitroaromatic compounds can adsorb specifically to clay minerals. The affinity and adsorption capacity of the clay minerals for nitroaromatic compounds depends on the type of mineral, with kaolinite the lowest and montmorillonite the highest. Clay minerals can control the mobility and bioavailability of nitroaromatic compounds in soils and aquifers.

Researchers from Switzerland and Germany proposed the injection of the electrolytes 4-nitrotoluene(4-NT), KCI and CaCl2 to retard the transport of 2,4,6-tritrotoluene in groundwater.
