Fate of hexachlorocyclohexane isomers in the Baltic and North Sea

Article Abstract:

The application of gas chromatography in the determination of the enantiometric excess of alpha-hexachlorocyclohexane (alpha-HCH), its main degradation product beta-pentachlorohexacyclohexane and the main degradation product of lindane is discussed. A culture of marine organisms representative of the North and Baltic Seas were subjected to laboratory degradation experiments. Results were compared to samples from the actual site. The necessity of a chiral substrate for the attainment of enantioselective decomposition was demonstrated.

The role of pollution in large-scale population disturbances

Article Abstract:

There is striking, convincing evidence that pollution is adversely affecting terrestrial populations. Some of the perturbations are novel; others, large-scale. Amphibians, birds and trees are all life forms whose physiology renders them susceptible to pollutants. The demise of these populations is best illustrated by the near-extinction of the Australian brooding frog, lower levels of migration among North American birds and the marked destruction of German forests.

Aquatic populations

Article Abstract:

Pollution may pose a significant risk for certain types of marine species. A study of large-scale perturbations showed that pollution disturbances were unique phenomena, unknown in previous marine research. The study analyzed die-offs of dolphin, seal, coral reef, sea urchin, fish and phytoplankton populations.
