Dynamic decisions

Article Abstract:

The Motor Industry Research Association (MIRA) has set up the world's first independent two-axle Kinematics and Compliance (K&C) laboratory and also a benchmarking club. It is available to all manufacturers and is advanced. The rig at MIRA's laboratory uses both the axles of a vehicle to measure the parameters. The parameters, such as bounce, roll and pitch motions, are measured simultaneously. The K&C test rigs measure the suspension and the steering characteristics of vehicles. The benchmarking club provides information on the automobile industry for lesser cost.

Fire service

Article Abstract:

Fire resistance is a major consideration in the development of engineering components. Since noxious fumes present problems for plastics and polymeric composites, several innovative methods and products have been developed to address them. Textron Systems has developed its most advanced passive fireproofing material, Chartek VII, which is less dense and improves thermal efficiency over its earlier counterparts. Another firm with a similar product is Alderley Materials Ltd., which developed Contratherm CS.

Injecting change

Article Abstract:

Mitsubishi Motors Corp. has developed the world's first direct injection petrol engine. The 1.8-liter GDI unit has an outstanding air-fuel ratio of 40-1, compared to traditional units with a 15-1 ratio. Other advantages of the engine are 35% fuel economy gains, substantial NOx and CO2 emission reductions and 10% power and torque improvement. The GDI engine is already enjoying strong Japan sales and will be available in the UK in 1998.
