A gatehouse for Johnson

Article Abstract:

Philip Johnson's one-bedroom concrete 'Gatehouse' in New Canaan, CT, consists of complex structural members. Numerous construction methods were considered but the shotcrete/manufactured panel technique was selected for its ability to overcome the difficulty of following the structure's radical design. The shapes were fabricated by spraying concrete onto wire mesh cages made up of two sheets of welded wire mesh joined by diagonal wires. Shotcrete was applied over the erected panels to come up with a continuously reinforced structure.
