Structural engineers devised a way to limit structural vibrations in New York, NY's Terrace on the Park without disrupting the building's activities. The original floor framing was stable enough for its original use but the building's conversion into a dance hall caused highly discernible and disturbing structural deflections. A thorough analysis through computer modelling showed the feasibility of using tuned mass dampers instead of erecting new columns. The final design solution eliminated the vibrations, facilitated easy maintenance and reduced construction costs.

Engineers are using a high-tech damper to prevent wind induced vibrations in the air-traffic control tower (ATCT) at Washington D.C. National airport. The external tuned mass damper's installation on the ATCT limits the maximum horizontal acceleration at the cab level for a once in ten years windstorm. The structural dynamics improve with a load-transfer system, which is typically designed to take care of low values of damping. Both are necessary in optimum combination to steady the structure at all times.
