1995 may be high-ozone year in U.S., early data indicate

Article Abstract:

Preliminary data gathered at various state monitoring stations through late July and August forecast a high ozone air pollution for several urban areas in 1995. High ozone levels are predicted for Texas, Chicago, IL, Kansas City, MO, San Francisco, CA, Detroit, MI, Miami, FL, Memphis, TN, Pittsburgh, PA, Birmingham, AL, and Salt Lake City, UT, which have exceeded air quality standards either once or several times in previous years. EPA and state officials attribute the rise in ozone levels to the summer heat, which enhances the reaction between hydrocarbons and nitrogen oxides, thereby stimulating the production of ozone.

Industry lobbying hit by community advisory panel members

Article Abstract:

Community and environmental officials are seriously evaluating membership in voluntary industry-community advisory panels following aggressive lobbying of Congress and state legislatures to diminish the powers of environmental regulation. Inability of Texas industries to secure regulatory reforms through a 24-member advisory panel for the Texas Natural Resources Commission made them shift directly to the state legislature, a move that triggered the resignation of eight public interest and environmental representatives from the panel.

EPA again delays mercury risk report release; will seek new reviews, wait for more data

Article Abstract:

The release of an EPA report on the dangers of mercury air emissions will be delayed by one to two more years pending more data from other mercury studies and reviews by its Science Advisory Board and a comparable FDA panel. EPA officials said industry, Congress and other federal agencies have been asking for a delay in the report's release. The report, which was supposed to be due Nov. 15, 1994, will contain the emission rate, health effects and control technologies for sources of mercury air emissions.
