The Assn of East Asian Research Universities was formed by 13 research institutes in China, Japan, Hong Kong, Taiwan and South Korea, to boost research cooperation in the region. A task force will choose specific areas of research and bring faculty and students together via conferences.

The Asian-Pacific Network (APN) for Global Change Research met in Tokyo, Japan, in Mar 1995 to plan a new network for sharing environmental data held by different Asian governments. The group must overcome governments' concerns about the affect of data sharing on national security.

Archeologists have found evidence that the earliest cultivation of rice may have occurred along the middle Yangtze River in central China. They have also found the ruins of a walled city called Longmagucheng in the Yangtze region.
