Will 'Trainspotting' breed junkies?

The film 'Trainspotting,' an adaptation of the cult novel by Irvine Welsh which is to be on general release shortly, has already attracted considerable controversy. Some observers feel that the film, which deals with heroin addiction in Scotland, glamorises drugs and is therefore irresponsible. It certainly shows drug addicts enjoying drugs, but also makes a valuable contribution to the debate about drugs. It gives an insight into the social context of drug abuse, and will not serve to attract young people into taking drugs.

Hanger 13, located in the town of Ayr, was the most fashionable hardcore rave venue in Scotland before it had its entertainment licence revoked recently following the death of three young ravers. Health professionals and people who attend local clubs believe that the club's managers have been unfairly targeted over the deaths. In fact, the official inquiry into the Ecstasy-related deaths cleared the club of blame.
