Will Nigeria's new leader have the right therapy?

Article Abstract:

The international community seems to firmly believe that General Abdulsalam Abubakar, Nigeria's new leader, will be able to revive the country's fortunes. There is a positive atmosphere, with talk of Nigeria being returned to a democratically elected government and of political prisoners being released. However, it is important to be cautious. Nigeria is still an extremely dysfunctional country where corruption is rife and society is not at ease with itself. It is very uncertain whether Abubakar will be able to solve Nigeria's problems, even if his efforts are very sincere.

Ken Saro-Wiwa was never a saint

Article Abstract:

Very mixed views have been expressed recently about Nigerian dissident Ken Saro-Wiwa, who was murdered by Nigeria's military dictators. He has been widely hailed as a hero, but evidence is now emerging that he had a complex personality and could sometimes be cynical and self-interested. He could be very harsh towards his opponents, but escaped punishment because he presented himself as a brave intellectual who would never be associated with such violence. His supporters have been given extensive media coverage since his death, while his victims have been ignored.

Why I can't agree with this tainted account of my father's life

Article Abstract:

Recent criticism by Richard D. North of the lifestyle and attitudes of Ken Saro-Wiwa was totally unfounded and unjustified. Saro-Wiwa did not, as claimed by North, lead a wealthy lifestyle in the UK, and there is no evidence at all to support the assertion that he was involved in corrupt dealings in Nigeria. Saro-Wiwa was totally honest about his financial dealings, and constantly challenged journalists to investigate his business affairs.
