Who gets what? Why?

Article Abstract:

Leading London arts centres such as the Albert Hall, the Coliseum and Covent Garden are competing strongly for funds from the National Lottery. Extensive redevelopment plans mean that a number of the most popular venues will be closed at the same time. Sadler's Wells, for example, while be closed from Jan 1996 until the end of 1997, while Covent Garden plans to close for two seasons from Jul 1997. However, even after these refurbishment schemes there will still not be an arts centre in London with acoustics which are as good as those which can be found in places such as Cardiff, Nottingham and Glasgow.

Article Abstract:

Sir Richard Eyre's report on funding for opera in the UK raises the wider issue of what makes an opera house live. The key element is continuity, involving shared memory, knowledge and passion. Even if the opera house is a magnificent building, it will not be really successful unless it has an artistic heart. This is only achieved through many years of programme-constructing and audience-building. It appears that the UK government has now begun to realize that opera is building up a new public year by year.

The music summer school at Dartington College in Devon, England, has been running since 1948. It does not aim to merely identify talent, but has in fact spotted a considerable amount of talent. Some of the music performed at the summer school is very traditional, while some is avant-garde. Indeed, one project involves producing a series of mini-operas which will be put out on the Internet. Particular emphasis has been placed in 1998 on the intermingling of music from East and West.
