Article Abstract:
Liquid paracetamol preparations can be very useful in reducing the severity of symptoms in a child who is clearly unwell. However, many parents give their child these preparations too frequently, simply because the child seems miserable or difficult. Research indicates that using liquid paracetamol in this way can cause more health problems than it solves. Children can begin to suffer recurrent headaches, which parents automatically treat with yet more liquid paracetamol. Children who suffer headaches should not be treated with a painkiller on more than two days a week at most.

It is now recognized that folic acid, a B vitamin, can reduce the blood level of homocysteine, high levels of which are linked with a raised risk of heart disease. According to pathologist Dr Kilmer McCully, adults should aim for a total daily folic acid intake of between 350 mg and 400 mg. It is hard to obtain this much from food, as natural folic acid does not survive cooking or digestion very well. For this reason, folic acid is most easily obtained from vitamin supplements and vitamin-enriched foods, such as Corn Flakes.
