Article Abstract:
WH Smith Chief Executive Richard Handover feels very positive about the rapid changes which have taken place at the company recently. He has had to deal with extensive criticism as the company has come under pressure from Tim Waterstone. It has now been decided to demerge the Waterstone's bookselling business and sell the music operations, which include Virgin-Our Price. Article Abstract:
WH Smith Chief Executive Richard Handover has recognized that this mass-market retailer of music, videos and books must make significant changes if it is to survive in the rapidly changing business environment. In particular, it must consider ways of withstanding growing competition from virtual retailers such as Internet bookseller Amazon.com. It has already made a number of changes, the most significant of which is the purchase of book publisher Hodder Headline. Handover is seeking further deals that will supply material to be sold online.
