US: RECORD SURGE IN TRADE DEFICIT

Article Abstract:

The US trade deficit reached new heights in November 1999 as rising imports and oil prices pushed the deficit to US$ 26.5bn. Despite posting record exports of US$ 82.89bn the strong US economy imported goods worth US$ 109.39bn. Analysts feel that a rise in interest rates could weaken domestic demand to remedy the current situation, plus they estimate that the expansion of the US economy in the last quarter of 1999 stood at an annual rate of over 5%.

US: GUACAMOLE BREAKTHROUGH REVEALED

US-based Avomex has succeeded in creating guacamole which remains fresh for up to one month after manufacture in what is regarded as an important breakthrough in food technology. The Mexican avocado dish tended to turn brown just one hour after serving but thanks to the use of autoclave technology, the polyphenoloxidase enzyme causing the discolouration is destroyed without any adverse impact on the taste.
