The Immigration minister, Barbara Roche, has revealed that the Government is preparing to unveil plans to change immigration policy and make it easier for thousands of skilled workers to migrate to the UK. The plans are expected to be officially announced on 11 September 2000 and will aim to recruit workers from overseas to fill shortages in information technology, health and other specialist sectors. The plans come at a time when the UK is being criticised for falling behind other European nations in the race to recruit foreign workers. The UK is said to be falling behind countries such as Germany and Italy, which have already relaxed their immigration policy to take in greater numbers of economic migrants with specialist skills.

The London Stock Exchange and the Financial Services Authority are to investigate irregularities in share dealings for Scoot, UK Internet group. The FSA has received complaints about disclosure of material information. It will assure compliance with listing rules requiring timely disclosure of price sensitive information by quoted companies. The Stock Exchange will looking into trading on 4 September when Scoot shares increased 60% after press reports said it was in takeover talks with French media group Vivendi. The disclosure was retracted but gains of GB[pound] 20mn were made in dealing of Scoot's shares. The regulator made no comment on whether the share price spike was a result of creating a false market.

Although chancellor Gordon Brown still claims that Britain needs to pass five tests before it is ready to join the euro, DeAnne Julius, who belongs to the monetary policy committee of the Bank of England says that economically Britain is ready to join the euro but the decision not to, at present, is a purely political one. The cabinet is split on the issue and, as a result, the prime Minister has been urged to show firmer leadership.
