Novelist Barbara Kingsolver finds it hard to believe that her latest novel, 'The Poisonwood Bible,' has been so popular. She recognizes that her writing can be challenging, as her characters always encounter significant difficulties. She feels that her novels are about survival, rather than manners. She always begins with a theme, and does not feel that she could justify merely putting attractive words together for no clear purpose. She regards fiction as the antidote to apathy.

Juan Bosch

Writer and politician Juan Bosch was born in La Vega, Dominican Republic, in 1909. He was involved the renewal of Dominican literature that was fostered by the debates of the La Cueva group of writers. He became particularly known for his short stories.

David Gascoyne

Poet David Gascoyne was born in Harrow, England, in 1916. He became involved with the Surrealists, and published his 'A Short Survey of Surrealism' at the age of only 19. He later became a leading religious poet.
