Too many men in white coats

Article Abstract:

Women scientists are generally at a disadvantage compared with their male colleagues when applying for research funds, according to research undertaken at Goteborg University in Sweden. They are frequently awarded a lower score than men when making research applications, and need to be much more productive in terms of published research than their male colleagues if they are to achieve an equal score. It is clear that a radical new approach is needed to the role of women in scientific research, especially in terms of helping them to reach the positions of greatest responsibility.

Take a walk through a world of molecules

Article Abstract:

Virtual reality is used in molecular graphics where it is helpful in designing drugs. Complex biochemicals are shown on a large screen. The user holds a handgrip to place a second molecule on the displayed molecule, trying out various locations. The handgrip is part of the Argonne remote manipulator, permitting three dimensional push and pull, torque exertion and reactions. The University of North Carolina Dept of Computer Science is pioneering this technology. A scanning tunnel microscope linked to the manipulator will study the diffusion of atoms.

Save the Earth - eat a turtle

Article Abstract:

The Earth's biodiversity should be regarded as an enormous potential resource for education, medicines, food, entertainment and even mental health, according to professor Edward O. Wilson, who first emphasised biological diversity publicly in his 1993 book 'The Diversity of Life.' He states that biodiversity is under threat even in places where species should be safe, such as national parks in the US and Canada.
