Article Abstract:
John Prescott, Labour MP for Kingston on Hull (East) since 1970, is a candidate for the deputy leadership. He is a working-class man who can be outspoken and believes strongly in social justice. Born in 1938, he left school at 15 and spent 10 years in the Merchant Navy before becoming involved in union work. He went to Ruskin College, Oxford in 1963 at the age of 25 and then to Hull University where he completed an economics degree in 1968. He was involved in the 1966 seamen's strike. In 1966 he stood as a Labour candidate in Southport. He was PPS to the Secretary of State for Trade from 1974-1976 and became front bench spokesman on Transport in 1988. He thinks the deputy leader should consider the problems of membership and providing better understanding for supporters.

Secretary of State for the Environment Michael Howard, 51, commenced in the House of Commons in 1983, as MP for Folkestone and Hythe. His father was a Romanian Jewish refugee and his parents kept a shop in Wales. He studied at Llanelli Grammar School and Peterhouse, Cambridge, where he gained a degree in law and was union president in 1962. He was called to the Bar and had a lucrative practice until he became a Lloyd's underwriter. When he married the model Sandra Paul in 1975 he gave up politics for eight years.

Bryan Gould, a contender for the leadership of the Labour Party, is a New Zealander who gained two degrees at Auckland University and won a Rhodes scholarship to Oxford in 1962. His sixth-form English teacher, Pauline Robinson influenced him. He joined the Foreign Office and entered politics, becoming MP for Dagenham in 1983. He is enthusiastic, determined and intelligent, thinks ahead and speaks his mind, but has had to hide his own opinions of the Common Market and financial policy.
